This song is so dear to my heart. If there is one thing I wrestle with, it's that religious feeling that I haven't done enough or haven't been good enough to be deserving of God's love. Well the truth is that I certainly am not deserving of His love. I have done nothing to earn the extravagant love of the God of Heaven and Earth. YET, He is in love with me! 1 John 4:19 says "We love because He first loved us". And so it is true... before I even knew God, before I felt any remorse for my sin, God set his sights on me and loved me and sent his son to the cross so that I could be in his presence for eternity. This is the gospel. And so everything I do towards God is not to earn His love or to fulfill some religious duty. It is all simply a response to what He has already done for me and in me. Oh the freedom! Thank you, Jesus!
lyrics
You saw my heart. Yes I was a mess from the start
Still You set Your sights on my soul and love took hold
Of me and You knew me - deep into the shame that did haunt me
Carrying my blame to the cross You took it all
I know that Your love came first when I didn’t do anything for You
Everything I have is from Your hand and I am resting in this truth
Your love came before I knew Your name
And Your blood was spent before I felt my shame
And You freely gave what I could never earn
‘Cause Your love came first and my love is a response
Father, I thank You, for I have seen the way You’ve pursued me
In all my faithless seasons and wanderings, Lord You held me
Close to Your heart - I am always found in Your arms
Faithful through these seasons of change, still You remain
And I know that Your love came first when I didn’t give anything to You
Everything I have is from Your hand and I am resting in this truth
Your love came before I knew Your name
And Your blood was spent before I felt my shame
And You freely gave what I could never earn
‘Cause Your love came first and my love is a response
Your love is the song I sing, Your love is the strength I need
I’m drawn into the mystery, the love that’s calling out to me
